What's Happening?

It's been an award winning season! The viewers of Nickelodeon voted them the Best Female Actresses of the Yeah for It Takes Two! Then, the Video Software Dealers Association, which is made up of all of the owners of video stores around the country voted their series The Adventured of Mary-Kate & Ashley the Best Children's Video of the Year. They had a contest last year in which 20 families won a Sea World Weekend Adventure winning a trip to Sea World of California for four days and attending a breakfast where they got to meet each of the families. You've probably seen some of our books from Parachute Press through Scholastic. There are four books in the Adventures series so far. This Fall they are releasing You're Invited to Mary Kate & Ashley's Sleepover Party. It will have tons of photos and a heart-shaped locket as a bonus. The Case Of The Christmas Caper will be out next month, followed in February by The Case Of The Shark Encounter. The two new videos that they just made, The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley The Case Of The Hotel Who Done It and You're Invited to Mary-Kate & Ashley's Hawaiian Beach Party, were released at the end of October 1996. They plan to start shooting their next movie veyr soon. They'll let you know as soon as they have finalized the schedule. Plans for their new television series are on hold while they wait to finalize the shooting schedule on their movie. As soon as they have move information, they'll let you know!

What's a gaffer?

Ever watch the credits at the end of your favorite movie and wonder what a "gaffer" or a "foley artist" is? What does a producer do anyway, and what is the difference between a producer and a director?

Producer: The Producer is the boss. He or she oversees the hiring of the director, and the artists, location scouts, production managers, and all of the other people necessary to make a movie.

Director: The Director oversees the shooting of the movie. They work with a casting agent to decide what sctors and actresses will play the different roles in the movie, then oversee the shooting of the scenes. It's the director's job to make sure that all of the scences are shot correctly.

Location Scout: A Location Scout is the person that goes out to find the perfect place to film the movie. Although many movies are made on the studio lot, there are still some scenes in a car. Other movies are shot "on location" which mean that they are in towns just like yours. The Location Scout will travel all over town, or the country, or sometimes even the world, looking for the perfect place to shoot certain scenes to give them just the right look.

Production Manager: A Prodution Manager oversees the daily operations. they make sure that everything is running smoothly and that nothing goes wrong.

Gaffer: A gaffer in a lighting person, they make sure that all of the lighting is set up just right so that you can always see what's going on and that the star oft he movie isn't in the shadows (unless they are supose to be, of course)

Foley Artist: A foley artist is a sound effects person. After the shooting of a movie is completed they make sure that everything sounds right. Their job is to make sure that you hear eveyrthing you should in a scene, like the clopping of hooves during a scene with a horse, or the smash of breaking glass.

Surf's Up!

Surfing is great fun. It's a sport started and created in Oceania (the Pacific Ocean Islands) and developed by the Hawaiians. What Captain James Cook came to Hawaii in 1778 strong Hawaiian athletes were riding waves on 150 pound slabs of hardwood. Surfing can be a lot of fun, but it can also be very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. If you want to learn, you should find an experienced surfer to teach you. Here are a few pointers to keep in mind.

Safety: Never go out alone! Always have a friend with you to help you out, or to get help for you in you need it. Never under-estimate the ocean! Remember, it isn't like your neighborhood pool. Some people even say it is a living thingm and sometimes it can be in a very bad mood. Never jump off the board head first!! Be aware of your surroundings. Remember, you are not the only person out there. You should always be courteous of other surfers and aware of the others around you.

Before You Go: Before you enter the water, you shoukd be sure that you are a good swimmer, and able to hold your breath underwater for a while. Even the best surfers "wipe out". Check for notices on the beach. Most surfing areas will have a conditions notice to tell you about the waves size, conditions, and dangers to watch for. Don't over-estimate your ablilty! If you are just learning, the most important this is learning to become comfortable on the boardm don't go for the big waved right away! Always keep one foot in front of the other. Always keep one foot on each side of the centerline of the board to help you keep balance. Duck diving waves. When waves come at you while you are paddling, be sure to duck. If you are looking up, you give the water more area of your body to push against.

Technique

Getting there - You need to develop a stong paddling technique. Before you can ride a wave, first you have to get to it. You are going to spend a lot of time paddling out but you don't want to use all of your energy doing it.

Getting up - Get to your feet quickly! You may want to practice doing this on the sand. Lay down on the board like you are paddling, then work on bringing your knees up under your body and standing up.

Terms (When you surf you need to speak the language)

Off the lip - When you are on the very top of the wave you got through the edge of the wave and it forces you down.

Stoked - Excited, how the waves make you feel as in "I'm stoked".

Floater - Throw your board up to the lip of the wave and float down while you ride the board.

Wipe out - When you are thrown off the board into the ocean.

Tubed - Surfing inside the wave under the curl.

Over the falls - A wipe out when the wave crashes over you and you are thrown up over the wave like going over a waterfall.

1994 - It was a very good year

SPRING - Went to Calgary, Canada to film our third movie How The West Was Fun. SUMMER - We filmed two episodes of The Adventures Of Mary-Kate & Ashely The Case Of Thorn Mansion and The Case Of The Logical i Ranch and recorded our third album Give Us A Mystery. FALL - The Adventures begin. Our new detective home video series was released and we wicked everything in front of 12,000 fans at FAO Schwarz, a big toy store in New York City. WINTER - We spent a week on a curise ship in the Caribbean and another at Sea World of Flordia filming the newest installments in The Adventures Of Mary-Kate & Ashley home video series, The Case Of The Mystery Cruise and The Case Of The Sea World Adventure.

You said it!

Dear Ashley & Mary-Kate,

How long have you been on TV? Is it fun? How old were you when you started? My friends and I watch your videos and sing the songs too. I was in my school talent shoe last week singing "I just can't wait to be king" I was Simba and got to wear cool lion make up. It was lots of fun! I hope to see you both soon!

Love, Ryanne

Dear Mary Kate,

I saw something last year about you wanting

a western saddle for Christmas.

I got everything I wanted for Christmas this

year, and I wondered if you did too! Did you get

your saddle?

Love, Katie

Mary-Kate: I already had a western saddle, and this year

I got an Engligh saddle, which is what I wanted. I got a

lot of other riding gear but the coolest present was CD.

CD is the horse we all got for Christmas!

Dear Mary-Kate and Ashley,

Last year I read that you were going to make a big movie.

Have you made it yet? When are you going to make it?

Love, Jennifer (a twin)

Ashely: No, we haven't made the movie yet, but by the time you

read this we will be in Toronto, Canada working on it. We will

be there for about 2.5 months. (The movie that they did finally make was It Take Two)

Dear Ashley & Mary-Kate

I just read something in the paper

that this is the last year for

Full House. Is this true?

Are you sad? What are you going

to do now?

From Sara

Ashley: Yes, this was the last year

of Full House.

Mary-Kate: We will be sad not seeing

the fun people we have worked

with over the past 8 years.

Ashley: We will be making another TV

series soon though, and we will still

be making The Adventures Of Mary-

Kate & Ashley videos and our first

big screen movie.

In The Case of Thorn Mansion you sing a

some called B-U-T-T OUT and you are really

rude to your little sister Lizzie. Did you

really mean those things?

Cathy

Ashley: No, we really love Lizzie. It was just

a song and what we are saying in the

song is that it's not for any mean reasons

that we don't want Lizzie to come

along. It's just because crime solving can be

dangerous and she's little and we don't

want her to get hurt.

Mary-Kate: We play with Lizzie at home all

the time. We are really close sisters.

There are so many new things going on this year. It's exciting and fun, but a lot of hard work, too! Having you there and knowing you care really helps us during those times when we are traveling so much. We love getting your cards and letters. Thanks, you're the greatest!
